Hi, beautiful people! I am starting a new piece on the topic of envy in relation to the show Succession and other examples such as Paris Hilton’s A Simple Life, Paris is Burning (1990), etc. I want to explore how the spectatorship of Succession opens up discussion about (class?) envy.
What is so entertaining about the show Succession?
What is the history behind pop culture’s obsession with the rich?
What is the relationship between the spectator and the subject?
How do representations of the rich, powerful, corrupted in popular culture invoke or lethargize class consciousness?
I am trying to scavenge more ideas and references! I would love love love to chat with you about personal stories about the show and any ideas surrounding the topic of “class” (I know it sounds a bit general…)
I am taking a little bit of a reading week to do some digging and will be back so soon with this piece! Meanwhile, if you want to check out my previous writing:
Lots of escapism I think. When I’m watching Succession, I know it’s a world I’ll never be a part of. I feel like I’m a spectator at a zoo. Their lives are so far removed from mine so I never actually compare it to my life. It doesn’t give me the sense that I’m poor. I guess I’m okay being pedestrian. I love the witty banter of the show and… the treachery. So good.
